This past weekend, Amit&S, Walt, Merima & John, Laquel, China, Matt and I went to the Humboldt Redwoods for a few fun-filled days of camping.
The 5-hour drive up was uneventful. We stopped at Jack in the Box for lunch (which got a few people sick) and stopped for some assorted sundries at Walmart (Merima's first time in a Walmart!) before arriving at
Hidden Springs Campground in Humboldt Redwood Park. The campsite has about 150+ sites plus bathrooms, showers, firepits, picnic benches, and millions of blood thirsty mosquitoes. They were everywhere.. I don't think any of us escaped without getting bitten once, and poor Merima came out of the weekend with more than a baker's dozen.
Everyone went to sleep pretty early that night. At about 3am, I got up to go to the bathroom and was FREAKED OUT by a red light descending into our campground. Everything was very hazy from the smoke and light diffused from the tall redwoods around us so I couldn't see it very well. I stood there wondering who the heck it was, and just in case it was someone I knew, I didn't want to freak them out by standing still, so I took a few steps in a circle, keeping my eyes on the freaky apparition. (I learned later that I looked equally as creepy with my black hair draped over my face, walking around in aimless circles, haha!) Then I hear a quiet, "Julienne??" Turns out it was Walt coming back from the bathrooms. I almost smacked him for scaring me so badly, but was so tired I just trudged up to the bathrooms. I was actually just going to use some bushes nearby, but now that Walt was up I had to actually go up to the bathrooms *grumble*. :P
The next day, we drove about 25 windey miles to Shelter Cove, a nearby beach where we could escape the heat and mosquitoes. We found a really cute spot to eat lunch and play Uno, frisbee, and toss the football around right above a rocky beach and next to a old windmill. In the surf, there were little sea lion heads that would pop out and look around at the beachgoers every so often. SO VERY CUTE.
In the evening, we finished up Walt's bday cake from the night before and roasted marshmellows late into the night, chatting. Walt apparently was very tired because his snoring was enough to rouse the campsite nearby where Laquel, John & Merima were sleeping, and I found out in the morning that I joined him in a few snoring choruses (it was China, not me!).
Very very fun, good times with the gang.
Going on week 3 without DSL.. kite festival in Berkeley this weekend.
